Cloud 9 App

Task

Create an app using the C9 branding that Ghost created.
The app will interface with a web app that supervisors will use and have access to on site.
User flow should be so simple that no training is necessary.

Persona

Dock Worker

Raising a family.
Low-skilled job, likely has high school education.

Goals

Extremely simple processing of pallets as they arrive.
User actions are limited to login, logout, and scan.
Processes guide user through the flow quickly to maximize productivity.
Deliver a full prototype to the client.
A personal goal: I used animation in this design. I really wanted to make this app delightful for the end user as, someone who has worked in a similar environment, I understand how tedious their job can be.

Cloud 9 app start up screen which allows the user to begin scanning pallets or to log out.

The Basic Flow

Upon first login, the user is greeted with a simple instructional card. After reading the sentence, the user click starts scanning and the camera app launches. The user snaps a photo of each side of the pallet. After the fourth photo, a review screen launches showing the four photos, pallet ID, and other information. The user chooses whether the pallet is single or double stacked and clicks transmit. The app confirms transmission with a success screen which allows the user to scan more or logout.

Observations and Lessons Learned

Working with a strong brand makes app design much easier.
I met with the client several times to fully understand what his needs for the app are.
This was my first fully functional prototype I completed.
The project was put on hold after a few weeks due to venture capital running low. It was sad for that to happen but it’s a good reminder that not everything designed will be produced.
